Sleep Paralysis
Submitted by Global Moderator: Evie
Have you ever been falling asleep and or waken suddenly and feel your body to be as though paralyzed, unable to move or call out for help? Seen or felt a dark evil shadow looming over your bed? Felt as though someone was actually sitting on your chest or body holding you down trying to choke you? Chances are you have more than likely suffered a Sleep Paralysis.
With the paralysis you can experience some, or more, of these common symptoms:
* A feeling of being choked or suffocated (YES)
*A feeling of someone pinning you down or sitting on you (your chest in particular) (YES!)
*Being able to hear noises including footsteps and voices close by (YES)
*Being able to see beings or dark shadows surrounding or standing near the bed (YES)
*A frightening feeling of evil descending upon you (YES)
*Shaking of the body (or bed) or rumbling sensation (ringing) in the ears (YES, to body/bed shaking)
*A feeling of untold evil surrounding you or trying to suffocate you (YES!)
*Noises such as knocking or banging on the walls (NO)
*The feeling of being in a dream like state but yet thinking you are awake. (YES)
MY story
I was in my mid twenties when it began, most unexpectedly. I was just about to fall asleep, when I heard a shuffling noise and I was sure I was not alone. I sat up to see what my son wanted, but I saw no one. However, when I looked into the mirror, which was perched on the dresser, I saw a creepy something hovering over a little girl. She should have been me...? Before I could react to this oddity, I was slammed down on the bed and felt pinned by invisible forces. I was paralysed with fear. I couldn't move, I couldn't yell, and I either couldn't breath due to fear, or the life was getting chocked out of me. I thought I was either going to die, or or worse, become possessed. I couldn't fight this!
There was a violent 'earthquake' happening on my bed that could have raised it off the floor! I have never felt more terrified in my life. When I was finally freed (could have been 2-10 minutes... not sure) I flew to the door and flung on the light but turned to have a quick look at the room before I dashed out. The bed was not messed up at all and I did briefly think it odd that this visual did not reflect what had just happened in my bed.
It happened 6 times in two weeks... when they first began happening. I wasn't yet calmed down from the last episodes and it would start all over again. I kept the lights on all night... all of them! For near a month! Then the episodes/attacks were happening only three - four times a year. I put a bible by my bed. Not to read... LOL ... just for display! I believed it would help, but every now and then, unpredictably so, I would experience this again. (The mirror thing only happened the first time)
What I experienced felt very real, I wasn't asleep when these occurred. I was so sure this was really happening to me. I couldn't convince anyone that this was NOT a dream/nightmare. I was AWAKE! But nobody believed me, or even really wanted to hear about it. Anytime I tried to tell anyone about my experience I got that subtle raised eyebrow look, which indicated I need to shut up about it. It feels crazy, looks crazy and certainly sounds crazy with the telling of it. I was worried I was 'losing it' so I would stop telling anyone what was happening to me but I never stopped wondering... what, who and why? Even a decade after they stopped altogether... I was looking for answers.
These horrifying experiences lead me to look to the paranormal for clues, as this certainly can not be described as normal. LOL I first went on a computer last fall, and I googled "sleep + paralysis" I couldn't believe (20+ years later) that this actually had a name and that I wasn't the only one in world who has these experiences. This was a bonus! (Not that I would wish this on anyone) However, accepting there was a rational explanation for this very bizarre experience, was very hard to do. I need to admit that at first I totally rejected the sleep paralysis theory. Well... it felt so real and I had been arguing this point for years!
But I am logical, as well as stubborn, and I can't deny that the bed NOT being mussed up at all... was an indication... it didn't really really happen. Plus, the mirror on the dresser would not have been in my eye range from where the bed was... it would have been impossible to see anything in the mirror. These two facts, made it impossible to hang on to my belief that this was a paranormal event. 'Sleep paralysis' gave me an assurance that I was not going crazy... I now accept this 'diagnosis' 100% ... but I am still a paranormal junkie. LOL
I can't begin to try and convince anyone that what they are experiencing isn't really happening to them... I wasn't easy to convince... LOL In my opinion, chances are that 'sleep paralysis' is also responsible for people believing they have been abducted by Aliens. OMG that has to be worse than my experience! Crazies or what?
Sweet dreams (smile)
